Stars and constellations are not fixed and move with speeds of many km per second.Once every 24hrs the Southern Cross and the constellations appear to move from east to west around appoint on the sky called the South Celestial Pole (SCP). This is caused by the Earth’s rotation on its axis, which extend out an imaginary line to the SCP. The point on the horizon immediately under the SCP gives direction to the Earth’s
south pole.
